An Asmaollah: a devotional composition. An arched mihrab, the prayer niche, crowns the field, flanked by flowering branches; beneath it a panel bears the Bismillah, In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. The field below is an ogival lattice of cartouches, each enclosing an invocation of God by His attributes (O Forgiver of sins, O Concealer of faults, O Answerer of prayers, O Remover of afflictions) set among fine floral work; the border carries further calligraphic cartouches. Pile, warp and weft all in silk, finely knotted and signed at both ends. The producer states this is one of only three pieces woven to the design, and that it will not be woven again.

Born in 1932 in the village of Jasb, Grand Master Aghagol Mir Mehdi has given some seven decades to his art. He began as a youth of sixteen, weaving wool carpets in his homeland, before moving to the holy city of Qom and devoting himself to the finest pure silk. Read more
