A Qajar door: two palace-door panels set side by side, each framing a bouquet of roses with game-birds in the corner cartouches, on a sky-blue ground within a red floral border, with woven Persian verse along the inner frame. The whole is worked in barjasteh, or sculpted relief: the pile carved at different heights so the birds and blossoms stand proud of the ground, raised into low relief. Silk and wool pile with silk floral highlights, on a silk foundation, signed Khajeh.

Mohammad Ali Khajeh is widely considered a living legend in Isfahan. He is the acknowledged master of the barjasteh, or sculpted-relief carpet. In this rare technique, the pile is carefully carved to different heights, bringing the design into three dimensions. Read more
