Gold Qajar Door

Mohammad Ali Khajeh

A Qajar double-door design in sculpted relief, on a warm gold ground. Each panel frames a flowering niche above, the blossoms raised in barjasteh so they stand proud of the field, and a flower-filled vase below; the panels are bordered with woven Persian verse. Wool and silk pile with silk floral highlights, the work of the Khajeh workshop and signed by the producer.

Mohammad Ali Khajeh is widely considered a living legend in Isfahan. He is the acknowledged master of the barjasteh, or sculpted-relief carpet. In this rare technique, the pile is carefully carved to different heights, bringing the design into three dimensions. Read more
