Gold Field

A pair, a lachak-toranj on a gold silk field. A medallion of navy and salmon rests just below the centre, held in a field of fine Shah Abbasi vinework and answered by corner-pieces, within a deep navy border. The composition is set in two-fold rotational symmetry, the diagonally opposite corners answering one another rather than mirroring across the centre. The field is worked entirely in silk, and signed in Persian in the lower border.

Mehdi Saeedi is among the few Isfahan producers of his generation who hold to natural dye without exception. He composes his own cartoons and describes his approach as sākhtār-shekani, a deliberate breaking with convention: he fuses the traditional and the modern within a single piece, and at times produces work that is fully contemporary. In 2022 Saeedi was honoured by the National Carpet Center of Iran as a finalist of the inaugural Qali-ye Fakher festival. His carpets carry a distinct character, recognisable to the trained eye by their colour and composition.
